A friend recently told me, “Boy you have a lot to say about Emily in Paris! For a silly tv show, I sure have spent a lot of time thinking about it!
One thing about the show that seems extremely polarizing is the fashion. I recently found out that the costume designer for the show is Marilyn Fitoussi of Sex in the City fame. Forbes magazine recently quoted her as saying about the fashion in the show, [they are] “women who think too much taste can be boring. They know ‘more is more and less is a bore,'” and “Emily In Paris can be a little sister of Carrie Bradshaw because she grew up watching it.”. Well that explains a lot!
Emily emulates Carrie Bradshaw in a more modern way.
I decided to use what I had to try to recreate some of the outfits from the show (but in a vintage style of course!), with the goal of creating outfits I’m more likely to actually wear.
Check out my article here about the difference between retro, vintage inspired, and vintage.
Full disclosure: I did purchase a few things. If I had all the resources in the world I could have made these outfits so much better but I used what I had! Although, I may or may not have used this as an excuse to purchase lavender boots.
Outfit 1: Travel Outfit
Emily’s travel outfit consists of black skinny jeans, white tee, red and black plaid jacket, white sneakers. Luckily I had all these outfits in my closet already and in fact have put a very similar outfit together.
My outfit details:
White top: PinUp Girl Clothing
Black Cigarette Pants: Lady K Loves
Red plaid Jacket: Seamstress of Bloomsbury
White sneakers: Keds
Outfit 2: Yellow Maxi Dress
Next is Emily yellow maxi dress. She casually strolls around a park in 4 inch stilettos. It made my ankles ache just looking at it! It’s really soooo incredibly difficult to walk in heels in Paris and heels like that should be reserved for special occasions.
I wore this adorable vintage reproduction jumpsuit, inspired by 1930s beach jumpsuits. Worn with Chelsea Crew 1930s style heels.
Outift Details:
Jumpsuit: Rock N Romance Vintage
Shoes: Chelsea Crew purchased at Mod Cloth
Outfit 3: Houndstooth and Lavender
Nex on the list is Emily’s “bed in the street” outfit: houndstooth shorts, lavender sweater, purple boots. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t really happy with my recreation of this outfit and I would have purchased a lavender cardigan if I could have. I do love these boots even though they’re not an exact color match for Emily’s.
Outfit Details:
Houndstooth Cigarette Pants: Piplotex
Sweater: Banned Retro via Top Vintage
Boots: Slide N Swing
Outfit 4: Gingham Suit
The infamous gingham suit, though! Over the years there have been many iterations of this patterned suit. Even Charlotte from Sex in the City wore something similar when she visited Paris, so this is a bit of a homage to her and the show’s time in Paris.
I did purchase this gingham suit for these pictures. It’s not really my aesthetic but I had fun with it and I’m sure I’ll find something to wear these items with as separates.
Outfit Details:
Gingham Suit and Red Beret: Unique Vintage
Red heels: Pin Up Couture Footwear
Outfit 5: PINK!
And finally, last but not least, THE pink outfit!
I used what I had for this outfit as I couldn’t find an argyle sweater that I liked. I’d love to redo this outfit in a true 1950s style rather than a haphazardly retro look.
Outfit Details:
Coat: Miss Candyfloss
Shirt: Freddie’s of Pinewood
Skirt: Lady K Loves
Shoes: Swivells
Are there any of these outfits, Emily’s or the recreations, that you would wear out on the streets of Paris? Which is your favorite?
